Introduction Getting started Tree settings Tools RPA Crown Shadows

Before you start

To use the program you will need:

1.    A base map. This is not strictly necessary but it provides a useful context for the trees. The Ordnance Survey is the most common source of base map data. The base map can be in  the form of Map Maker DRA files, ArcView shape files, MapInfo MIF files, or AutoCAD DXF files (where using DXF files, only simple lines and polygons will be shown - not more complex objects such as "meshes"). The base map coordinates should be on the UK National Grid and in metres.

2.     A barriers file. You will need to create a barriers file unless your trees are fortunate enough to be well away from barriers to root growth, such as walls, drains, roads, etc. Note that the base map described above is purely a visual aid, it will not, of itself, provide the barrier data the program requires. The barriers file should consist of line objects and can be supplied as a Map Maker DRA file, an ArcView shape file, a MapInfo MIF file, or an AutoCAD DXF file. The coordinates of the file should be on the UK National Grid and in metres.

3.     Tree data.  You will need to enter a set of data for each tree. The list below shows all the data suggested in the British Standard except the tree shape and the crown base height (in red). The general classification of shape and the crown base height are required by the program to cast shadows. The items required by both the British Standard and the program are in black.  The items shown in grey can be recorded in the program but are not required by the program.

The data can be entered into the program manually or imported from a file. The file can be a comma separated text file (*.csv) where the first line names the columns, an Excel spreadsheet (*.xls) or an MS Access table (*.mlb).
